Last week I received this cover along with my order from US stamp dealer.  It’s nice that he used real stamps for the postage, but sadly the postmaster had an artistic moment with blue ink pen.

Besides the US lighthouses stamp issue, the cover has several stamps from the 1974 set to commemorate UPU centenary.

In addition the cover has several postage meter stamps (or so I presume). And no, the date of sale is not the same as shipment date – though this cover shipped staggering 40 days from US to Finland.

Sad to say, but this happens all the time in American post offices. If I’m sending a large envelope with stamps on it, I always take it to the window and ask the clerk to cancel the stamps by hand.

another sad note to other US postal patrons … i found that when one requests the hand canceling of one’s cover, one should also request that the cover be marked to avoid “machining.” if not, then the cover could still end up being machine canceled as well, which all too often results in damage to the stamps which have been so carefully selected and placed.
