The final era in collecting stamps of Trucial States is UAE, United Arab Emirates. Unlike its preceders, UAE has been highly conservative stamp publisher. Topics of stamps are usually national, and only approx.1,000 face different stamps have been issued from 1973 to date. As my collection of UAE stamps is highly limited, I’ll focus on what I have – meaning mainly various definitive stamp series.

The first stamps of UAE were large size definitives issued on Jan 1st 1973:

1973 United Arab Emirates. The first issue of UAE celebrated the new nation by displaying national symbols and sights.

The second wave of UAE definitive stamps are so called “Crest definitives” displaying the national arms of UAE. These exist in several types / designs issued between 1976 to end of 1980s:

United Arab Emirates. Crest definitives of various types. Issued (from left to right) 1976, 1977 and 1982 (two rightmost stamps).

In 1990 a new long term definitive design, “Hunting falcon”, was taken into use. 1990s introduced also additional (somewhat short-lived) definitive stamp sets displaying sea shells and flora. See below for images:

In 2004 the “Hunting Falcon” definitives got a facelift with new design:

For any discussion of these areas one really needs the knowledge. The opening core text is Neil Donaldson ‘The Postal Agencies of Eastern Arabia and the Gulf’, then the Arabian Gulf States Quarterly’. Other books are around; including my ‘Postal History of the United Arab Emirates; Volume 1 Abu Dhabi’ and more. I have to add these are available at http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/AlastairJ hope the selling is allowed, sorry. I also mention Andre Gondocz site http://www.ohmygosh.on.ca/ for the stamps and the m,ost comprehensive list of literature for this area.

No problems with this for me… Good philatelic literature (whether paid or free) is the cornerstone of our common hobby. I’m very happy to promote it.
