The Imperial Winter Egg by Carl Faberge – Finland Miniature Sheet
For the past weeks I’ve been mainly showing stamps from the 18th and 19th century. I think it’s time to get a fresher look and focus for a while with some modern postage stamps for the next month or so. This week I’ll be showcasing some of the modern miniature sheets from Finland. Let’s begin with Imperial Winter Egg miniature sheet issued in 2005.

The sheet (Michel Block 38; stamps #1771-2; catalogue value 14€) is IMO one of the finest examples of modern high quality printing. The level of fine details is truly amazing as the enlargements below show.

Total print of this sheet was only 200 000 copies, in addition there were 2,500 numbered deluxe copies with real gold and silver embossing used.
I think most of the print went straight in to the hands of collectors and dealers. Most copies I’ve seen are full sheets either as mint or with high quality (favour) hand cancels.
