The fine art of Ivan Aguéli on stamps
Ivan Aguéli (1869-1917) , also known as Sheikh ‘Abd al-Hadi Aqhili upon his acceptance of Islam, was a pioneer and master of Swedish modern / contemporary art. In addition he was also a wandering Sufi (a Muslim mystic), linguist and author. To commemorate a centenary of Ivan Aguéli’s birth Sweden issued it’s first miniature sheet in year 1969.

1969 Sweden - A miniature sheet to commemorate birth of Ivan Agueli. Michel Block#1 (stamps #638-43), cat. value 3.20€
The works on the miniature sheet are: Egyptian girl /Egyptian II (1915), Stockholm view (1895), Landscape from Gotland (1891), Road landscape (1915), Nature morte (1915) and Egyptian house (1915). All these works showcase brilliant use of colors, that Aguéli learned from the likes of Cézanne, van Gogh and Gauguin while studying art in Paris.

Really wonderful. I love your blog. I was able to discover a new artist, and learn something.
Thank you for the beautiful , clear close ups of stamps I might never see otherwise.
Hi Kathy,
and many thanks for the positive feedback. It’s nice to hear you liked Agueli’s works as they are truly stunning piece of art.
How wonderful to read the background history of this stamp.
My Mother went to Sweden in 1969 and brought this back to me for my art stamp collection. I am thrilled to know more about it.
Susan
Hi Susan,
and thanks for response… If interested to see the paintings “live”, I think most (if not all) are displayed at Aguéli Museum or NationalMuseum (National Gallery of Sweden).
