Happy Earth Day
Earth Day, celebrated April 22, is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. In honour of Earth day, I’ll be sharing a picture of recent Finnish “Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers” (or “Stop Global warming”) miniature sheet cover I received some time ago.

Finland 2009. Stop Global warming stamp issue. Half of the miniature sheet used on cover
The stamps on the Melting Glaciers miniature sheet are round: one forms part of the background picture’s sky and the other is part of the sea. Between the stamps, in the middle of the miniature sheet, there is a graphical representation of the globe, with the polar regions marked out by the stamps’ perforations. The edges of the sheet depict representations of rising temperatures and sea levels. The miniature sheet was issued on 18 March 2009.
Some 40 countries will issue stamps on climate change this year. The common theme is Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers. The international stamp collaboration is being led by Finnish post.
The miniature sheet and global symbol for the campaign was designed by Saku Heinänen.
