Finnish dogs, moomins and multinational Finland on covers
While on the subject of dogs, let’s take a look of some of the Finnish dog stamps as well as other Finnish stamps on covers I have received lately.
First I have few covers with stamps from the 2008 Dogs booklet. The first stamp shows Finnish Spitz, a national dog breed of Finland. It is mainly used for hunting in Finland. The breed is well known from it’s sharp and loud barking, that greets both expected and “unexpected visitors” in most Finnish households.

Second we have the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from the same booklet. This is a small breed of dog of Spaniel type, usually considered one of the toy dog breeds. Unfortunately this is one of the dog breeds, where excessive breeding has caused severe health issues for entire breed.

From dogs to moomins… Here’s one of the stamps from 2009 Moomins set. Moomins have become somekind of success in Finnish stamps, and new set is issued almost every year. This year the images show black/white-original drawings by Moomin creator Tove Janson… Little My (or Pikku Myy in Finnish) is definitely one of the key characters of Moomins. She’s funny, spicy, adventurous, sometimes naughty… Everything a girl’s got to be

And finally here’s a stamp from the controversial “Multinational Finland” set issued in 2009. Racial issues are something people in Finland try to avoid, but they do exist. IMHO the Finnish post did a truly good job with this set. The stamp I have is showing a Finnish boy as a construction worker, other stamps on the set show an african boy as fireman, asian boy as skijumber, asian girl as a doctor etc. So this set is truly about the changing faces of Finland as well as about tolerance.
