Finland 2007 Eurovision song contest miniature sheet
One of the true signs of spring is Eurovision Song Contest. This year the contest, 54th in order, will be held in Moscow between 12th and 16th of May. Besides being one of the most watched television events in Europe, Eurovision has also a long tradition on philately with various special covers, cancellations and stamps around the Europe.
Athens 2006. The hell froze over. Finland won the Eurovision Song Contest with hard rock band Lordi’s performance. Both were 1st times ever. The same night entire Finland went berserk with victory. The impossible had happened.
Victory also meant that Finland would host the 2007 song contents. In may 2007 the Finnish post issued a miniature sheet (Michel block #44, stamps #1843-46; catalogue value 5,60€) to celebrate the contest. The topic of the sheet was of course last years winner Lordi and past Finnish “success stories” (mainly top10 placements) in Eurovision song Contest.

The stamps on the sheet are peelable and cut to cloud-shape:

Don’t know if the Lordi stamps are world’s first “headbangers ball” eligible postage stamp, but I havent heard of any other hard rock/heavy metal band receiving their own official postage stamps. Personally I’d like to see some UK stamps tributing bands / classic records like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple or Iron Maiden. I think it’s only fair since Beatles got their tribute.
